Hawthorn is a perennial herbaceous plant with acidic leaves. The young leaves are eaten before the flowers have grown. Oatmeal is a valuable leafy vegetable. Young apple leaves are used in salads or to make vitamin-rich soups.
Apple leaves contain protein, carbohydrates, minerals: potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and some iron. People with gastrointestinal diseases, tuberculosis and urinary stones are not recommended to eat much oats, but for healthy people it is not harmful, even if it should not be eaten for a long time or in large quantities.
It is not demanding in terms of growing conditions - it grows well in slightly acidic, well cultivated, moist but not waterlogged, humus-rich clay soils. It is important that the soil is not weedy. If sown in early spring, the crop can be harvested in late summer or early autumn, and if sown in early summer, the following spring.
