It grows up to 2-3 m tall. Late spring blooms last 3-4 weeks and are a beautiful mix of lavender, purple and pink. The erect, open branches are covered with light green, heart-shaped leaves that remain attractive well into summer. This old favourite (introduced in 1922) is one of the most beautiful and reliable garden ornaments. It is exceptionally beautiful when in flower. To extend the lilac season, grow clematis through the branches at different times to add colour and charm to the shrub. Ideal for sunny mixed yards. The flowers are full, lilac coloured with a reddish tinge and the panicle is 20-30 cm long. Leaves are green, broad, oval.
This sun-loving plant grows easily in fertile, humusy, alkaline or neutral, dry to moderate, well-drained soil. It grows well in chalky soils but does not like acid soils. Tolerates light shade but flowers best in full sun. Mulch is advisable when planting in full sun. Good air circulation is needed.
