The award-winning 'Charles Joly' lilac is an upright deciduous shrub, with an inflorescence full of beautifully fragrant, purple, double flowers. The abundant flowers, which emerge from purple buds in late spring, last for 3-4 weeks and create a spectacular display. The erect, open branches are covered with dark green, heart-shaped leaves that remain attractive well into summer. This highly prized French lilac, which was first cultivated in 1896, is still popular today. To extend the lilac season, grow clematis blooms at different times through the branches to add colour and charm to the shrub. Ideal for sunny mixed borders.

This sun-loving plant grows easily in fertile, humusy, alkaline or neutral, dry to moderate, well-drained soil. It grows well in chalky soils but does not like acid soils. Tolerates light shade but flowers best in full sun. Mulch is advisable when planting in full sun. Good air circulation is needed.
